Trump's System of Consequences and Incentives

Trump's voracious urge for payback has swiftly morphed into a structured system. Within the twelve months, the president's fury and impulses have adopted the form of official policies in a manner comparable to historical repressive regimes. Government personnel who resist his demands are summarily removed and succeeded by supporters. Political officials who confront him risk prosecution, judicial process and punishment. Opponents have been categorized under presidential memoranda as “anti-American”, “opposed to religious values” and “anti-capitalist”, and menaced with prosecution as “terrorists”.

Government Institutions Transformed

Every case involving prosecution of Trump's enemies and immunity for supporters exhibits its own distinct features. However, despite their individual character, they embody manifestations of what has emerged as a calculated approach. These events are anything but random. Trump's purge of DoJ prosecutors and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, coupled with his placement of supporters in high-level positions, commenced rapidly, quickly took on a pattern, and has now been molded into a system. DoJ and the FBI have been transformed into political organizations under Trump's explicit command to execute his demands. Wrongdoing has been rendered routine. It constitutes the system of punishment.

Administration is more concerned with targeting the President's perceived enemies than they are with safeguarding our public welfare.

Within the System

The origin of this framework has been revealed in the lawsuit of several previous high-ranking Federal Bureau agents filed in late summer in the US district court in the capital against FBI director an administration figure and top lawyer another official for illegal termination in “a campaign of retribution against the officials for what administration figures considered to be a refusal to exhibit proper devotion”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the previous interim leader, describes a conversation in which he “openly admitted the impropriety of his behavior”.

He had tried to protect law enforcement officers from being dismissed, the complaint alleges. The director informed him that “White House figures” – understood by the official to be the White House and federal prosecutors – had ordered him to remove all those who they identified as having worked on a criminal investigation against Trump. The document continues: “The director clarified that he had to terminate the personnel his superiors told him to dismiss, because his chance to hold his own job depended on the removal of the personnel who were involved in matters involving the leader. The director commented that there was no option he or him could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the agency attempted to incarcerate the leader in prison and he remembers.’” Once he advised him he was violating the FBI's own policies, the director reportedly said “he knew that and he was aware the essence of the immediate dismissals were probably unlawful”.

Extensive Effects

Following Patel's reported confession to him, the Department of Justice and the law enforcement agency have been dismantled and redirected for his revenge apparatus. Several of the FBI's high-ranking agents were terminated or forced out in the first days of the administration. Roughly thousands of lawyers at the department have agreed to a “voluntary departure plan”. No fewer than multiple DoJ lawyers, among them those in the Manhattan division, stepped down in objection over what they viewed as partisan influence in dropping the corruption case against the local official, a political figure, in exchange for his assistance with his federal agency roundups of immigrants. The public integrity section of DoJ, which manages ethical violations, has been diminished to two attorneys. The civil rights division has been severely reduced: the majority of its employees has left. One-third of senior leaders at the justice department have resigned. The section upholding environmental law has lost 50% its management.

Incentives and Sanctions

Concerning the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, she, resigned in dissent against what she labeled as the “quid pro quo”. A key figure, Trump's “border czar,” appeared as the implementer with him on a media outlet to announce: “If he doesn't come through, I'll reappear in New York City.”. And, Emil Bove, formerly the justice department figure and a former Trump attorney, who negotiated the deal, was granted an court role, a likely stepping stone to the supreme court.

His immunity for offenses perpetrated while in government, granted by the unprecedented ruling of the GOP-led on the judicial body, thus preventing his criminal case over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his political viability for the presidential race, is the basis on which he depends to protect his supporters. Given this protection, he has been freed to authorize wrongdoing. The consequence of the court judgment permeates his administration and the political party down to its bones. The legal case has metastasized. Similar to Richard Nixon's White House counsel John Dean said about the Watergate
