The English and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish and Scotland also share a group together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools conclude according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
